norsk teolog, dr.theol. 1978, professor i teologi (Det nye testamente) ved Universitetet i Oslo fra 1984. Har utgitt bl.a. Theology in Conflict: Studies in Paul's Understanding of God in Romans (1980; doktoravhandling), The Economy of the Kingdom: Social Conflict and Economic Relations in Luke's Gospel (1988) og Putting Jesus in his Place (2003). Leder av Norges Kristelige Studentbevegelse 1979–82. Aktiv deltaker i offentlig debatt om religion og etikk. Æresdoktor ved Københavns Universitet 2005.
