Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Novellen The Yellow Wallpaper (1892; norsk oversettelse Kvinneland og Det gule tapetet, 1981) er en mesterlig skildring av hvordan en kvinnes avmakt driver henne inn i psykosen. Hennes senere romaner er ikke like overbevisende.

Imidlertid fikk hun stor betydning som foreleser og som forfatter av en rekke feministiske samfunnsstudier, blant annet Women and Economics (1898), som analyserer kvinnens situasjon i historisk, sosiologisk og sosialøkonomisk perspektiv, Man-Made World (1911) og His Religion and Hers: A Study of the Faith of Our Fathers and the Work of Our Mothers (1923).

Harriet Beecher Stowe og Catharine Ester Beecher var Gilmans grandtanter og Henry Ward Beecher hennes grandonkel.
